, talented German director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (36) has confirmed rumours that he is to try his luck stateside. It is now certain that he will direct The Tourist, a US remake of Jérôme Salle’s French thriller Anthony Zimmer (2005).

The project has gone through several cast and crew changes. Henckel von Donnersmarck was apparently chosen as a replacement for Bharat Nalluri at a time when UK actor Sam Worthington was being considered for the starring role, instead of Tom Cruise, who was set to appear opposite Charlize Theron.

Johnny Depp eventually landed the lead role, while rumours began to circulate that the film would be directed by Alfonso Cuarón (Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban). In the end, it is the Oscar-winning German director who will helm the film, with Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie in the starring roles.

Shooting is expected to start in the spring and the film’s release is planned for 2011.
