Herz and Procházková earn Best Director awards

Slovak-born filmmaker Juraj Herz has received the Bavarian Film Award and €20,000 for Best Director for his new film, Habermann [+see also:

. Mark Waschke was named Best Actor for his role in the film.

Habermann is set in period leading up to and during World War 2 in the Sudeten borderland between Germany and Czechoslovakia. The film tells the story of miller whose life is torn apart by war and ethnic conflict.

Habermann is a co-production between Germany, the Czech Republic and Austria. It is distributed by Farbfilm Verleih in Germany. Bonton Film will release it in the Czech Republic on March 11. Atlas International is handling sales.

In India, Maria Procházková was named Best Director at the 8th Pune International Film Festival for her film Who's Afraid of the Wolf.

The award comes nearly a year since the film's premiere in the Generation Kplus competition at last year's Berlinale. The film went on to screen in festivals in Karlovy Vary, Rio de Janeiro, Vancouver, London and Denver and took top honors at Plzen and Zlin.

Who's Afraid of the Wolf employs magical fairytale elements to tell a marriage drama from the point of view of the film's child protagonist. The film was produced by Bionaut Films and is distributed in the Czech Republic by Bontonfilm. Film Europe handles international sales.
