Fabrega’s Cold Water of the Sea among Tiger winners

is one of the three Tiger Award winners of this year’s International Film Festival Rotterdam, which ended Sunday.

The first Costa Rican production (Temporal Films), Cold Water of the Sea was co-produced by France (Les Films du Requin), Spain (Tic Tac Producciones), the Netherlands (Isabella Films) and Mexico (Pimienta Films) and in November 2008 won one of the first TorinoFilmLab Production Awards, worth €120,000, which allowed him to begin shooting in February 2009.

The jury said: “The film takes the audience on an unusual journey through a nature that interacts with people in a magical way. The superb editing ensures an organic flow of images, whilst the strong directing and disturbing atmosphere create tension.”

The other two VPRO Tiger Award winner were Mundane History by Thai filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong and Mexican director Pedro González-Rubio’s Alamar.

The €7,500 Audience Award went to Spanish title Me Too [+see also:

by Álvaro Pastor and Antonio Naharro, while the Dioraphte Award of the Hubert Bals Fund was given to Kenyan filmmaker Hawa Essuman for Soul Boy, produced by Tom Tykwer.

The 40th edition of the IFFR will be held January 26-February 6, 2011.
