France and Italy agree about production

The situation surrounding support for production continues to be a worry for professionals in French cinema. As far as the institutional side is concerned, the Minister for Culture and Communications, Jean-Jacques Aillagon, used his visit to the Venice Film Festival to talk to his Italian counterpart, Giuliano Urbani. The theme of the discussions: the need for countries in the European Union to reconcile as much as possible the structures to support cinema production. He working group which has just been set up, will be meeting again soon in Rome to hammer out the details for a common French-Italian position.
In due course, the bodies of professionals which represent French cinema directors and producers (ARP, CSPEFF,SPI, SRF e UPF) will be preparing to debate with the satellite TV channel, Canal+ about the conditions for the application of the diversity clause, which prevents the multiplicity of productions. Members from the cinematographic circuit who give out unlimited subscription cards for entry to movie theatres (UGC, Gaumont) are also invited to take part in the debate. They have confirmed their support for the clause: “thus allowing French cinema to present a unified front in the discussions with Canal+”, a move which has been welcomed by ARP, the association representing artists, directors and producers
