CANNES 2002 Semaine

Intacto opens with a thriller

- The movie by the Spanish director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo has inaugurated the new edition of this series

Fresnadillo follows in Amenabar´s footsteps. Following two Goya awards for best directing debut and for best young actor (Leonardo Sbaraglia), as well as his participation at the latest Sundance Festival, «Intacto» has already been scooped up by Lion Gate Films, while Buena Vista Motion Pictures group has sealed a contract agreement for a remake. Indeed, it sounds like a repeat performance of «Arbre los Ojos», Alejandro Amenabar´s creation on which the same Americans based the film «Vanilla Sky». In this film, a compelling Max Von Sidrow, a Jewish survivor of the Holocaust, takes sadistic pleasure in tempting fate by playing Russian Roulette. The protagonists are all men who have managed to cheat death (lucky?) through some quirk of fate. They never even meet. They have a natural gift for usurping the energy of others: all they need is a photograph to acquire a soul. «Intacto» will be screened the Olympia tomorrow afternoon (at 6 PM) and Monday evening at the Miramar (at 8 PM).
