Breillat, Hong Sang-soo bookend sidebar
La Belle Endormie (Sleeping Beauty), written and directed by Catherine Breillat, and Hong Sang-soo’s Oki’s Movie will respectively open and close the Horizons section of the 67th Venice International Film Festival (September 1-11).
Breillat is one of the most important contemporary filmmakers to tackle the subjects of desire and sexuality while Hong is considered the father of the new Korean cinema, and this year won Cannes’ Un Certain Regard with his film Hahaha.
The two films will vie for the newly establishes feature film prizes – the Horizons Award and Horizons - Special Jury Prize – in the section that this year opens itself up to works of all formats (from under one hour to over two), with a broader view of new cinematic languages from the world over.
La Belle Endormie – loosely based on the popular stories and Charles Perrault’s fairy tale – stars Carla Besnaïnou, Kérian Mayan, Julia Artamonov and David Chausse. It is produced by Jean-François Lepetit and Sylvette Frydman for Flach Film Production, with CB Films and Arte.
