Estoril fest warms up

24/09/2010 - The 4th Estoril Film Festival will run from November 5-14. For the third consecutive year, The Sword and the Rose [trailer] (selected in the Horizons section at the Venice Film Festival [see review]); Thomas Arslan’s German title In the Shadows [trailer] (presented in this year’s Berlinale Forum); and Marc Fitoussi’s French work Copacabana [trailer] (shown in Cannes Critics’ Week [see review]).
Romania will be represented by two films, which audiences also got a chance to see on the Croisette in May: Andrej Ujica’s fourth documentary The Autobiography of Nicolae Ceausescu [trailer] (out of competition), and Aurora [trailer], the new film by Cristi Puiu (Un Certain Regard [see review]) after his multiple award-winning The Death of Mr Lazarescu [trailer].
The official competition jury comprises experimental musician and artist Laurie Anderson, pianist Piotr Anderszewski, chef Juan Mari Arzak, musician and journalist Adolfo Luxúria Canibal, designer Bella Freud and actress Valeria Golino (Grazia’s Island [trailer]).
Besides a selection of out-of-competition screenings, the festival will also include retrospectives of the work of directors Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) and Elia Suleiman (Divine Intervention) and a series of homages to eminent figures from the film world, including Roman Polanski, Vincent Gallo, Chris Marker, Marisa Paredes and Koji Wakamatsu.
