Murphy, Bell, Newton begin Retreat

Debutant British director Carl Tibbetts has commenced principal photography on Welsh locations for psychological thriller Retreat. The film stars Irish actor Cillian Murphy (Perrier’s Bounty [+see also:

) alongside British actors Thandie Newton (RocknRolla [+see also:

) and Jamie Bell (Hallam Foe [+see also:

) and is based on a screenplay Tibbetts co-wrote with Janice Hallett.

Murphy and Newton play a couple visiting a remote island trying to salvage their marriage. Their idyll is destroyed when a soldier (Bell) is washed up on shore with dire stories of everyone in mainland Europe dead of an airborne virus.

The film is a co-production between UK’s Magnet Films and Ireland’s Ripple World Pictures. Gary Sinyor is producing with Dominic Wright, Jacqueline Kerrin, David Frost and Michael Rosenberg serving as executive producers.

Sony Entertainment has acquired the UK, Irish and German rights. Quickfire Films and SC Films are handling international sales.

Veteran cinematographer Chris Seager (White Noise) is director of photography.

Murphy will soon be seen as counter culture activist Richard Neville in Beeban Kidron’s Hippie Hippie Shake. Newton’s current credits include Huge [+see also:

and Vanishing on 7th Street, while Bell has a raft of upcoming releases including The Eagle, Jane Eyre and The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn.
