Tuesday, After Christmas sweeps up at Gijón

was the major winner at the 48th Gijón International Film Festival, which closed on Saturday, November 27. Spain’s most important independent film event lived up to its reputation and awarded Best Feature to Radu Muntean’s film, one of this year’s most outstanding European productions.

As well as the festival’s top prize, Tuesday, After Christmas received two other accolades for its three lead thesps: Best Actor went to Mimi Brănescu and Best Actress was shared by Mirela Oprisor and Maria Popistasu.

European cinema’s prominence doesn’t end there, for the prize list also includes Benjamin Heisenberg and Martin Prinz, winners of Best Screenplay for German title The Robber [+see also:

, directed by Heisenberg; Vali Ighigheanu and Andreea Popa, who won the Gil Parrondo Prize for Best Art Direction for Cristi Puiu’s Romanian/French/Swiss/German co-production Aurora; and Serbian film Tilva Ros [+see also:

by Nikola Ležaic (see interview), which nabbed the Special Jury Prize.

The only prize which escaped the clutches of European cinema was Best Director in Official Competition. The jury comprising Ana Torrent, Rui Pereira, Pablo Stoll and Juan Cavestany awarded it to US director Kelly Reichardt for Meek’s Cutoff.

Finally, Oliver Laxe’s Spanish title You Are All Captains [+see also:

won the Youth Jury Award for Best Feature (shared with Derek Cianfrance’s US film Blue Valentine); and Ellen Smit’s Dutch/Belgian co-production Eep! triumphed in the “Enfants Terribles” section as Best Film for under-13s.
