French film composers unite

French film music composers have set up their own union, the UCMF. Late last month, around forty French musicians including Vladimir Cosma and Jean-Claude Petit took the decision to unite. This is the very first time this has ever taken place in France, where musicians tend towards individualism. Presided over by Greco Casadesus and secretary-general, Jacques Davidovici, the UCMF has set itself a number of important goals including improving awareness of film music by organising conferences, festivals and speaking to film students. They also intend protecting original soundtracks from being included in the catalogues of the major film production companies, something that is on the increase. All in all, an ambitious programme for an association that can count on the excellent international performance by French film music.
