OSCAR 2003 Spain

Three directors for one Oscar

by

- Films by Almodóvar, Garci and de Aranoa are up for the Spanish nomination for the Best Foreign Film

Almodovar is still chasing an Oscar. It was announced by Marisa Paredes, the president of the Spanish Film Academy, who’s chosen, for the 75th edition of the Hollywood Oscars, in addition to Talk to Her by Pedro Almodóvar, Historia de un beso (History of a kiss) by José Luis Garci and Lunes al sol (Mondays in the Sun) by Fernando León de Aranoa. The three films will be fighting it out to see who gets the Spanish nomination to contend in the Best Foreign Film category.
The Spanish Academy has chosen films of two directors who are well known in Hollywood. In fact both Garci and Almodóvar have already won an Oscar in the past. The first won in 1982 with Volver a empezar (Begin the Beguine), the second in 1999 with All About My Mother. For Fernando León de Aranoa, it would be the first time, but he’s also counting on the star of his film, Javier Bardem, who’s already received a nomination for Best Actor, last year for his role in the film Before Night Falls by Julian Schnabel.
