BOX OFFICE UK

Michael Moore, bowling for success

by

In London to promote his documentary film, Bowling for Columbine, selected for the London Film Festival, and now on general release, his new book ‘Stupid White Men’, and his one-man show at the Roundhouse, Michael Moore has enjoyed fantastic coverage in the British press, and the publicity has paid dividends.
In only three days, Bowling for Columbine, distributed by Momentum Pictures, set a new UK record for the biggest opening of a documentary film; taking GBP 157,898 (Euros 247,000) from a limited release on 28 screens.
In London’s West End, the satirical documentary that won the 55th Anniversary Prize at the last Cannes Film Festival, came second at the week's box office with a reported take of GBP 82,700 (Euros 129.000) from 10 screens.
According to Screen Daily, the film’s fantastic performance in its opening weekend means that it is the 7th best-performing documentary film ever released in the UK; the chart is topped by In Bed With Madonna, followed by Buena Vista Social Club, When we Were Kings, Microcosmos, Lost In La Mancha and Kurt and Courtney.
Momentum Pictures will increase the film’s exposure next week with another six prints.
