Etre et Avoir Best European Documentary

- Over 1.3 million French filmgoers have seen this touching story of one teacher's dedication to his job that's won Nicholas Philibert Europe's top award

The European Film Academy in Berlin announced the winner of the Best European Documentary Award 2002 – ARTE Prize is French documentary, Etre et Avoir (To Be and To Have) by Nicholas Philibert. The film was seen by more than 1.3 million French filmgoers making it one of the most successful Gallic documentaries of all time.
Etre et Avoir is the sensitive story of a small one-classroom school in the heart of France’s Auvergne regione where all of the children, from kindergarten age until the end of elementary school, have been taught by one single teacher for the past twenty years. Nicolas Philibert's film describes in a very impressive way the extent of the teacher's affection for "his" children.
The European Documentary Award 2002 - Prix ARTE, the 10th in the European Film Academy's continuing association with ARTE will be presented to Nicolas Philibert on Saturday, 7 December at the 15th European Film Awards to be held at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome.
