FILMS Denmark

Danes at Sundance

- A record five Danish films selected for America's pre-eminent indie film event from 16-26 January 2003

Danish films are going to be more visible than ever before at the next edition of the Sundance Film Festival (Park City, Utah, 16-26 January 2003). To date, only two Danish films, Ole Bornedals’ 1995 Nattevakten and Jacob Gronlykkes’s 1999 Lysets hjerte, have ever been selected to take part in America’s premiere independent film festival, so the selection of 5 Danish films is a clear sign of the renewed vigour of the national industry. Sundance is renowned for being the gateway to the north-American market for European films.
Thomas Vinterberg will have the honour of becoming the first Danish director to have a film selected for the “Premieres” section with It`s All about Love. Nicolas Winding Refn’s Fear X will have its world premiere in the “World Cinema” section alongside Susanne Biers’ Elsker deg for evig (Open Hearts).
Two documentaries, Jesper Jargil’s De lutrede (The Putrified), and Jorgen Leth’s Nye scener fra Amerika (New Scenes from America) were selected for the World Cinema/Documentary section while Anders Morgenthaler`s school project, Araki The Killing of a Japanese Photographer is competing in the International Short Film section.
Aside from the Danes, only two other Scandinavian films were selected for Sundance: Baltasar Kormákur’s The Sea (Iceland) and Unni Strames’s Music for Wedding and Funerals (Norway).
