Unter Kontrolle in Vienna
Two films dealing with mental illnesses are presented in a double event at the Film house in Vienna (11 December 2002). In Urgences, the French documentary filmmaker Raymond Depardon films patients of mental clinics.
The feature, which was shot in the emergency psychiatry unit of the Hotel-Dieu hospital in Paris, constitutes Depardon's most accomplished documentary. Thanks to a perfectly rigorous mechanism, he was able to film everyday people in their neediness, their crises, and their suffering.
At the same time, the German director and former doctor Stefan Landorf, in his film debut Aufnahme, focuses his camera on the daily routines of doctors and patients in a mental institution, portraying them as the working parts of machinery that functions efficiently. The film received the 3sat Documentary Film Award in the 25th Duisburger Film Week.
