- The French director, whose latest feature Son frère is in competition here, will head up the Festival jury

The name of the President of the international jury at the 56th Cannes Film Festival, scheduled to run from 14 to 15 May 2003, was revealed today. French film director Patrice Chéreau will sit in the chair last occupied by David Lynch.
Chéreau is a highly respected filmmaker who is well known for his work in the theatre and in opera. He won two important awards for his 1994 drama, La Reine Margot (the Jury Award and Best Actress for Virna Lisi). Chéreau's long and illustrious career has been rewarded by a number of important prizes, including the Louis Delluc, a Golden Bear in Berlin, and a César for best director with Ceux qui m’aiment prendront le train. He is also an actor and his films include Andrzej Wajda’s Danton and Youssef Chahine’s Adieu Bonaparte. Reacting to the good news in a statement to the press, Chéreau asked for a few days to think about and “get a better understanding of where the film industry is right now, where we hare headed, and which stories we should be telling. And most especially, to see the films and love them.”
