French film's Rendez-Vous

by

The 5th edition of French Cinema Rendez-Vous, organised it Paris by Unifrance , the agency for the promotion of French film and audiovisual products in the world, has begun. The five-day event is also a major film market and this year over 500 industry operators, 140 journalists, 350 film buyers and their TV counterparts from 30 TV channels from France, Europe, Canada and Latin America will gather for a series of meetings, screenings and discussions.
Each of the five editions has seen a significant increase in participation. In 2002, 42 million people chose to see a French film somewhere in the world, an 8 per cent increase on 2001. That is why this event is so important.
This year’s edition will see a bidding war for the 34 completely new films and 20 features (the latter presented earlier this year at Mifed). The titles include some that were selected for the forthcoming Berlinale (6-16 Feb), like Antoine de Caunes’ Monsieur N., Pascal Bonitzer’s Petites coupures and Karim Dridi’s Fureur. The line up also includes major box office hits like Ah! Si j’étais riche by Michel Munz and Gérard Bitton (seen by 1.1million people), Guillaume Canet’s Mon Idole, as well as auteur-driven films like Jean-Pierre Limosin’s Novo and Benoît Jacquot’s Adolphe starring Isabelle Adjani.
The Unifrance event is also taking place under the patronage of the French government: on 20 January, French Prime Minister Jean-Pierre Raffarin will receive a delegation of European and Latin American film industry operators.
