- The Berlinale will feature a distinct short film section and a “Short Film Night”. Complete programme above

Starting this year the Berlin Film Festival intends focusing public attention on short films, the medium that is the traditional testing ground of entire generations of new filmmakers. The 53rd edition of Germany’s pre-eminent film event will feature a distinct short film series called “Short Film Night” that will be judged by an international short film jury who will assign all-new Gold and Silver Bear Awards on 11 February at the Berlinale Palast. Two series of short films will be screened daily at the CinemaxX6.
The 728 submissions from 46 countries were whittled down to 57 short films, 17 of which will screen in Competition, 24 in Panorama and 16 in the Kinderfilmfest.
Another important novelty is represented by the fact that instead of screening with features as was the custom in both Competition and Panorama, short films will now be given slots of their own. The genres include animation, documentaries and experimental titles.
The Berlinale audience will be invited to give their opinion of the short film selection during Short Film Night on 13 February at the Haus der Kulturen der Welt (House of World Cultures). A selection of short films from Competiton, Panorama and the Kinderfilmfest will also screen during the Berlin Talent Campus.
