The end-of-2002 report of the French National Film Centre, that was published on 31 January, included a detailed breakdown of the 177 short films that shared a total grant of Euros5.22m.
The short film is a traditional nursery for filmmaking talent of the future and in France those who work in this genre can access financial aid in the form of one of the CNC’s four schemes: pre-production support (in 2002, 50 short films shared Euros2.28m); experimental films (43 shared Euros1.9m) ; the "quality award" which goes to films that were produced without funding at an earlier stage (39 shared Euros0.9million) and COSIP, or grants for short films co-funded by a TV network (45 shared Euros0.57million).
In 2002, 45 per cent of all short films produced in France (390 short films were released theatrically) benefited from one of the CNC’s schemes. The lion’s share of the money went to drama: 142 of the 177 films were dramas; 22 were animation, and 13 documentaries. In addition, the producers and directors of short films can also access additional and more specific financial aid for, for example, rewrites, commissioning original scores, the use of digital technology in the production process and DICREAM ( for multimedia artistic creation).
