Panorama Special - Pure

by

- Scottish director returns to Europe from Hollywood to bring us a sad story of drug addiction in a heartless (and hopeless) London

Molly Parker is the star of Gillies MacKinnon’s latest film Pure, selected for screening in the Panorama Special section in Berlin. She plays a young widowed mother who turns to heroin for consolation after her husband’s death. Despite her own addiction, she fights tooth and nail to prevent her boy from falling victim to the lure of drugs. Gillies MacKinnon, a Glaswegian whom audiences will remember for The Playboys (1992) and Hideous Kinky (1998), recently returned to Europe after working in Hollywood with Steve Martin. Many of MacKinnon’s films are about the family and Pure is no different. It is based on a real life event that was adapted for the screen by Alison Hume. MacKinnon, currently on the Scottish set of his forthcoming 17th century drama, shot the film in London’s East End, between Upton Park and the West Ham stadium and the city he portrays is a desolate place where solidarity and compassion are virtually unknown.
