New film law to be submitted soon

Portuguese Minister of Culture Gabriela Canavilhas announced yesterday that a new film law will be ready and submitted for approval to parliament by the end of this year.

Canavilhas admitted there was a long process of negotiations, the outcome of which will create the conditions to establish a sound local film and audiovisual industry.

The upcoming law was elaborated by Portuguese film body ICA, the national Film Museum and the General Inspection of Cultural Activities. Its main features have not yet been announced but some of details have already been unveiled. Among them, the expansion of film financing to mobile operators and the elimination of the 2007-born FICA – Investment Fund for Cinema and Audiovisual.
