film profile] and I’m Looking at You, Mary is a sort of journey into a man’s private world through his relationships with his family and close friends.
The film is set in Italy during the Second World War, in a palace cut off from the world. In an atmosphere of emotional tension mixing love and jealousy, a drama develops for a lawyer whose German wife (Renatte Jett) and brother (Jacek Poniedzialek), a fascist officer, are involved in an ambiguous relationship. The time comes when he decides to take revenge.
According to Barczyk, Italiani is the result of his search for a new language in order to get beyond the conventions of psychological drama. Almost entirely financed by the film’s team and piloted by Wytwórnia Filmów Fabularnych Błyskawica (set up by the director), production was spread over four years with shooting starting in Tuscany in 2006. It was lensed by DoP Karina Kleszczewska, the director’s usual collaborator.
