FESTIVALS Italy

Rome celebrates indie cinema

by

The 2nd edition of the Roma Independent Film Festival is taking place in the Italian capital from 26 February to 2 March. As the title suggests, it is a competitive event for indie filmmakers and an important showcase for films that struggle or fail to get a theatrical distribution.
This year RIFF has doubled its competitive sections, going from 3 to 6 - the new categories being digital shorts, international and animation. RIFF is hosted in three Roman cinemas: the Pasquino, Roma and the Ripa Hotel, where the awards will be handed out on Sunday 2 March.
Of the six features in competition only one is Italian: Quelle Piccole Cose, Fabrizio Cattani's directorial debut about the secret lives of a group of young professionals. The other competitors are Absolute Hundred by Srdan Golubovic (Yugoslavia), Despues de la luz by Salomon Shang (Spain), Summer Rain by Jonathan Glendening (Great Britain), Touching Wild Horses by Eleanore Lindo (Great Britain/Germany/Canada) and Y si te vi, no me acuerdo by Miguel Barreda Delgrado (Germany/Peru).
Eight films were selected for the Documentary Section and a further two will be screened out of competition. Italian Shorts features the work of seven filmmakers, as does International Shorts. There are 6 Digital Shorts and 4 Animated Shorts.
