Gavras’s Le Capital gets advance on receipts from CNC
Adapted from Stéphane Osmont’s homonymous satirical novel offering a savage portrayal of the boss of Europe’s biggest bank, Le Capital by Costa Gavras (photo) is among the 12 feature film projects selected at the spring sessions of the advance on receipts committee of the National Film and Moving Image Centre (CNC).
Piloted by KG Productions, the project (which Vincent Cassel has signed on to star in) will take a behind-the-scenes look at the higher echelons of the banking world, where the thirst for money and power is masked as managerial rationality. Here we move in the circles of the economic elite and the international jet set between Paris, London, New York, Davos and Tokyo, basking in the artificial paradise of drugs, the artificial images of the Internet, the artificial bubble of fleeting fortunes, the artificial time of different time zones and artificial sex fuelled by wild fantasies.
We realise that the new video games are killing our children, the new values are killing our humanity, the new idols are killing our desires… and we’ve perhaps all turned into monsters.
The CNC also made the pledge of an advance on receipts to Olivier Assayas’s Something In the Air (MK2 and Vortex – see news); François Dupeyron’s Donnez-moi Un Corps (“Give Me A Body”, F comme Film); Anne Le Ny’s Cornouailles (Move Movie); and Jean-Pierre Améris’s L’Homme Qui Rit (“The Man Who Laughs”, Incognita Films), based on Victor Hugo’s novel of the same name.
Two documentary projects were also selected: Sébastien Lifshitz’s Les Invisibles (“The Invisibles”, Zadig Productions); and Vincent Dieutre’s Orlando Ferito (Roland Blessé) (“Injured Orlando – Injured Roland”, La Huit).
Among the debut features, the CNC selected Boris Lojkine’s Des Lumières de l’Europe (“The Lights of Europe”, Zadig Productions); Cyril Cohen’s Suzanne la Pleureuse (“Suzanne, The Weeping Woman”, Thelma Films and Barbecue Films); Thierry de Peretti’s Pifano, La Cité de l’Ombre (“Pifano, The City of Shadows”, Naïa Productions); Yossi Aviram’s La Dune (Les Films du Poisson); and Samuel Rondière’s La Braconne (“The Poacher”, Bandonéon).
