by

French-Spanish director Juan Carlos Medina is currently helming the shoot for his debut feature, the thriller Painless. It is jointly produced by companies from three European countries: Spain (Roxbury Pictures and A Contracorriente Films), France (Les Films d'Antoine and Tobina Film) and Portugal (Fado Filmes). Shooting, which started on July 17, will last until early September in locations in Catalonia and Huesca.

Scripted by Luiso Berdejo and Medina, the movie centres on a neurosurgeon who needs a bone marrow transplant. In order to survive, he must find his biological parents. In his search, he discovers that during the Spanish Civil War a group of children were born with a strange and unknown condition: they were insensitive to physical pain.

The cast reflects the production’s international nature and stars Spanish actors Alex Brendemühl and Juan Diego, Iceland’s Tómas Lemarquis and Holland’s Derek de Lint.

Besides collaboration from Televisió de Catalunya (TVC), Painless has backing from Cofimage and Canal+ France, and support from the ICIC, the ICAA, Eurimages and Ibermedia. International sales are being managed by French company Elle Driver.

This thriller also marks one of the first forays into production for distributor A Contracorriente Films, which recently announced that it will also back Daniel Cohen’s French/Spanish co-production El Chef, starring Jean Reno, Michael Youn and Santiago Segura, which wrapped shooting on July 22; the comedy Tres Mil (“Three Thousand”), written and directed by Miguel Angel Pérez and Javier Asenjo; and Xavier Gassió’s documentary Evita’s Shadow.
