by

The 3rd Douro Film Harvest will open on September 5 with a screening of The Death of Carlos Gardel, produced by Luis Galvão Teles (Fado Filmes), helmed by Swedish director Solveig Nordlund and based on Portuguese author António Lobo Antunes’s novel.

This family melodrama set in the world of tango and drug addiction stars Rui Morisson, Carlos Malvarez, Teresa Gafeira, Albano Jerónimo and Ruy de Carvalho. It is one of three films showing in avant-premiere at the festival, along with Asif Kapadia’s Brit documentary Senna, and Woody Allen’s Midnight in Paris [+see also:

Situated in the wine-making region of Douro, in Northeast Portugal, the festival has named its sections after the different wines of the area. Tawny Tribute will thus pay homage to Brazilian filmmaker Carlos Diegues. Brazil is also the guest country in Ruby Selection, while LBV will focus on Manoel de Oliveira, who shot several of his movies in this region.

Despite what its name might suggest, Vintage Selection will present some of the most recent titles in the line-up, including Terrence Malick’s Palme d’Or-winner Tree of Life and Iranian director Asghar Farhadi’s Berlinale Golden Bear-winner A Separation, as well as Las Acacias by Argentina’s Pablo Giorgelli, and animated flick Chico & Rita [+see also:
