D’Symmetrie vum Päiperlek currently shooting

Though the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg will not be sending a feature to represent the country in the Best Foreign Language Film category at next year’s Oscars, since no films qualified, not one but two Luxembourg-language features are currently shooting, ensuring a similar situation is unlikely to occur next year.

While shooting on the Luxembourg police drama Doudege Wénkel continues, filming has also started on D’Symmetrie vum Päiperlek, which is described as an “asymmetrical comedy” with surrealist touches.

The film is the second feature of directors Paul Scheuer (pictured) and Maisy Hausemer, who earlier co-directed (together with Georges Fautsch) the 1989 film Mumm Sweet Mumm.

D’Symmetrie vum Päiperlek, which translates as The Butterfly’s Symmetry, tells the story of a famous chess master, Gregori Sczyrkutah, a well-known misogynist who is beaten at his own game by young and talented Luxembourg chess player Sophie Latour. Obviously, this defeat is hard to take for Sczyrkutah...

To get his revenge, a Swiss software engineer, Max von Allmen, proposes that Gregori uses a revolutionary chess software that is guaranteed to beat Sophie.

But, while Max is programming the software, he falls in love with Sophie...

And, to further complicate matters, this entire story is imagined by a Luxembourg writer, Roger, during his prolonged stay at an old-age pensioners’ home, where he uses the people he sees around him as inspiration for the characters in his story.

The large cast includes Marie Jung, Frédéric Frenay, Luc Schiltz, Marc Olinger, Marie-Paule von Roesgen, Steve Karier, Frenand Fox, Nora Koenig and Marie-Christine Faber.

The film is also written by the directorial duo, and is produced by Nicolas Steil for local outfit Iris Production S.A..
