CinÉast Festival hands out awards

The first edition of the CinÉast Film Festival in Luxembourg to have a competitive strand and an official jury officially came to a close this weekend.

The festival focuses on Central and Eastern European films and is currently in its fourth year (news). The awards were handed out on Saturday, while screenings continued through Sunday in venues across Luxembourg City.

The new festival showcases films from Hungary, Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia, as well as a guest country, which this year was Bulgaria.

The CinÉast Grand Prix went to Polish director Lech Majewsksi for his The Mill and the Cross [+see also:

, which stars Rutger Hauer, Charlotte Rampling and Michael York and is a somewhat avant-garde take on the titular painting by Pieter Brueghel. The film is a Polish-Swedish co-production.

The Special Prize of the Jury went to Adrienn Pál [+see also:

, the Hungarian-Dutch-Austrian-French co-production directed by second-time filmmaker Ágnes Kocsis.

The jury consisted of Polish director Agniezska Holland and five Luxembourg film industry figures: critic Antonio Raul Reis, producer Paul Thiltges, director Bady Minck, Luxembourg City Cinémathèque director Claude Berthemes and university lecturer Gian Maria Tore.

The festival’s Audience Award went to the dark comedy Czech-made-man from Tomáš Řehořek, which tells the true story of the career of Jakub, who tries to live the American Dream, Czech-style.
