Portuguese film honours to be called the Sophia Awards

The recently created Portuguese Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, headed by producer Paulo Trancoso (pictured), decided last Monday at a general assembly that the national film awards will be called the Sophia Awards, in homage to the poet Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen.

Besides the name, it was also agreed that the prizes will be awarded in 20 different categories and that the first ceremony will take place in April or June of 2012, depending on the agreements signed with the television channels for its broadcast.

The Portuguese Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences was set up with the aim of defending and promoting the national film sector and bringing it closer to an often disinterested public.
