Berlinale: Gomes’s Tabu to vie for the Golden Bear

film profile], by Portuguese director Miguel Gomes, will vie for the Golden Bear at the 62nd Berlinale, which will run from February 9-19. This is the first time since the screening of Manuela Viegas’s Gloria, in 1999, that a Portuguese feature is being shown in competition at the prestigious German event.
Gomes, who came to international attention in the Cannes Directors’ Fortnight in 2008 with Our Beloved Month of August [+see also:

film profile], now returns with the story of a temperamental old lady, her Cape Verdean maid and her neighbour who is committed to social causes. After the old lady’s death, the other two women find out about an episode from her past: a story of love and crime set in an Africa that looks like something out of an adventure movie.
The cast is headed by Teresa Madruga, Laura Soveral, Ana Moreira, Carloto Cotta, Isabel Cardoso, Ivo Müller and Manuel Mesquita.
Tabu is produced by Luis Urbano (Producer on the Move 2007) for O Som e a Fúria in co-production with Komplizen Film (Germany), Shellac Sud (France), Gullane Entretenimento (Brazil) and ZDF/ARTE (Germany). The Match Factory is handling international sales.
