First works and lots of European premieres at the Rome Independent Film Festival

- International independent cinema is back in Rome from April 12 to 20, with a selection of 150 works from all over the world.

One of the most important dates for international independent cinemas is back in Rome: the RIFF - Rome Independent Film Festival will this year be held in the Nuovo Cinema Aquila from April 12-20, with a rich programme of 150 works selected from national and international first works and premieres.

by Iceland’s Rúnar Rúnarsson, selected to the Directors’ Fortnight in Cannes in 2011; Poland’s Courage by Greg Zglinski, winner in Venice 2004 with first work Tout un hiver sans feu; also in competition is the documentary by controversial experimental Czech filmmakers Karel Vacheck, Obscurantist and his lineage.

Italian first works include Daniele De Plano and Gianni Cardillo’s Ristabbanna (starring Ben Gazzara and Tiziana Lodato) and a documentary about Ethiopia by the actress Valentina Carnelutti.

The documentary section will this year also give special attention to finding possible tools for peace and dialogue between peoples. The event on human rights will focus on Burma after the liberation of Aung San Suu Kyi, with the screening of the film by Midi Z, Return to Burma, presented in European premiere at the latest Rotterdam Film Festival.

The festival’s other events include: the IV Forum New profiles of independent European Film Production, with producers taking part in the European Film Promotion’s ‘Producers on the move’ project. Participating in the forum are Marta Donzelli for Italy (Vivo Film), Lukasz Dzieciol for Poland (Opus Film), Radim Prochazka for the Czech Republic (Produkce Radim Prochàzka s.r.o.), Hlin Johannesdottir for Iceland (Zik Zak Filmworks) e Jesper Morthorst for Denmark (Alphaville Pictures). A meeting about the current situation of cinematography in relation to the dynamics of distribution is also planned.

Finally, Spain brings the cycle Metraje encontrado, a selection of films made using a technique of found footage (a collage of images), which showcases the more innovative and risky side of independent cinema of modern Spain.
