A prestigious cast for Yvan le Moine’s Rosenn
by Aurore Engelen
04/07/2012 - Yvan Le Moine is back in the director’s chair, eight years after the release of his last film, Friday or Another Day (Independent Critics’ Prize in Locarno), an adaptation of Friday, or, The Other Island by Michel Tournier. The director repeats two themes from his previous film in Rosenn: life on an island and the character of an actor whose career is in decline. Rosenn tells the story of a tired actor, who intends to make the most of being on tour in the islands to escape the emotional agitation that complicates his life in Europe. But escaping one’s destiny is not so easy, and when he meets the beautiful, vital, and innocent Rosenn, a young teacher living in the islands, his old demons will soon catch up with him. But Rosenn is not only a romantic portrait, but also a historical film set from the end of the 19th century to just before the First World War.
Shot in Réunion, the film will star Belgian actress Hande Kodja, who recently appeared in Marieke, Marieke [trailer] by Sophie Schoukens. The rest of the film's impressive cast will include English actor Rupert Everett and French actor Michel Aumont (to appear at the end of the month in Paris Manhattan [trailer] by Sophie Lellouche), Béatrice Dalle, Stanislas Mehrar, and Firmine Richard. The film’s cinematography has been entrusted to the very active Belgian chief operator Danny Elsen (Loft [trailer]), who also worked with Yvan Le Moine on The Red Dwarf and Friday or Another Day.
Shooting started on June 27 and should last six weeks of the island of Réunion. The film has received support from the Belgian French community’s Film and Audiovisual Centre as well as the Flemish Audiovisual Fund, and is produced by AA les films belges and Vivi Films in Belgium, as well as Artisan Films in France.
