is released onto 50 French screens by courtesy of Colifilms Distribution who are specialised in Spanish and Spanish/American titles. The film was a huge popular and critical success at home: selling over 2 million tickets and winning 5 Goya Awards, was selected for screening at Sundance 2003 and won the Golden Shell Award at last year’s San Sebastian Film Festival.
Given the excellent reviews this film, and especially its star, Javier Bardem, received from French critics, who described Aranoa as “the Spanish Ken Loach”, Mondays in the Sun is expected to perform well.
Several European titles have performed well in France, such as Italian Emanuele Crialese’s Respiro [+see also:

. That is not to say that Bardem won't have his work cut out for him: he faces some stiff competition from the likes of Stupeur et Tremblements [+see also:

by Alain Corneau and starring Sylvie Testud, that is also released today by Bac Distribution onto 150 French screens in the Japanese version.
Mondays in the Sun is scheduled for release in Italy on 21 March.
