Germany begins compulsory registration for theatrical features films

The German government has agreed on a compulsory registration for German feature films. This new regulation will be added to the federal archive law. “Feature films are a crucial cultural asset,” underlined Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media Bernd Neumann (photo). “It is of public interest to record the complete German film heritage by a compulsory registration. This is an important step for a substantial protection of the film heritage in the federal archive as the national film archive.”

The producers are obliged to deliver detailed information on their films in terms of content and technical data, which will be collected and made available in an integrative system. A key data base for the German film heritage is crucial in regards to the digitization and represents a big challenge for the entire media industry.

According to the new draft law the producers have to register their films in the new data base of the federal archive. So far only films that received public support have been registered - and the data collection was decentralized.
