film profile], which was recently reported to the Swedish Chancellor of Justice for “gross defamation of character,” received 11 nominations – almost the double of its closest competitors – for the Swedish national film award, the Guldbagge, which the Swedish Film Institute will present at an SVT televised gala on January 21 at Stockholm’s Cirkus, hosted by Swedish actress-comedian Babben Larsson.

Call Girl will, among others, be considered in main categories Best Film, Best Director, Best Actress (Pernilla August), Best Original Screenplay (Marietta von Hausswolff von Baumgarten) and Best Cinematography (Hoyte van Hoytema). Nearest runners-up, Jan Troell’s The Last Sentence [+see also:

film profile], which won for Best Director at the Montreal World Film Festival, and Malik Bendjelloul’s documentary, Searching for Sugar Man, both signed six nominations.

The son of the late Swedish prime minister Olof Palme, Mårten Palme, who reported Call Girl to Sweden’s Chancellor of Justice, is mostly surprised that it might win for Best Script – “it is childish, totally confused, it depicts a society governed by a group of pedophiles”, he told the local press. Inspired by the Swedish brothel scandal in the late 1970s, it includes a scene where a politician who may resemble Palme buys sex from an underage girl.
