Norwegian admissions up in 2012 despite decrease in local films

Although Norwegian fare sold 24.1% fewer tickets than in 2011, two local features - Espen Sandberg and Joachim Rønning's Kon-Tiki [+see also:

and Nils Gaup's Journey to the Christmas Star (photo) - made sure that admissions for domestic product for the fifth consecutive year exceeded two million. Together they signed 61% of attendance for local films. Nominated for a Golden Globe, and shortlisted for the Oscar as Best Foreign-Language Feature, Kon-Tiki's 881,658 admissions were enough to kill James Bond in the home market. Still domestic share went down to 17.8% (2011: 24.5%).

"After all, last year's result was 4% up on 2011, to pass the 12.1 million mark - the third-best outcome in the last 10 years," explained head of communications Birgitte Langballe, of Norwegian cinema association, Film & Kino. "In 2012 three films took more than 500,000 admissions - the 10 top earners accounted for 41% of total."

"Blockbusters control the major part of the ticket sales - in less than three weeks in December, New Zealand director Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey reached 450,000 audiences, and with Journey to the Christmas Star it controlled 60% of December's box office."

Langballe also pointed out that Norway's national digital roll-out - the first in the world - had also influenced last year's statistics. "Small theatres, with less than 10,000 annual admissions, had upped their attendance by 15%, while the average progress for larger theatres were 4%," she concluded.
