film profile], will open the sixteenth edition of the Spanish Malaga Festival, which will take place on April 20-27 in the Costa del Sol capital.

Ayer no termina nunca marks a return to the big screen for the director after Mapa de los sonidos de Tokio [+see also:

film profile] (presented in competition in Cannes in 2009) and will arrive in Malaga after a world premiere in this year’s upcoming Berlinale in the special Panorama section.

The plot of the film was expressly kept under wraps at the director’s request during filming in Barcelona last September and October. The only detail revealed at the time was that the film was set in the near future. Now that screenings have been announced, a few additional details have emerged. These include that the film is set in 2017 when the economic crisis has reached its apogee in Spain, with over seven million people unemployed. A couple (played by Javier Cámara and Candela Peña - photo) meet on the tomb of their son in a cemetery, which is about to be destroyed to make way for the construction of a casino. The situation provokes an explosion of rage, hatred and bitterness.

As Coixet confirmed to Fotogramas magazine, the film “talks about the consequences of everything we are living through today. So no, this is no demented comedy.”

Ayer no termina nunca is a Miss Wasabi Films and A Contracorriente Films production, which will also distribute the film in Spain as of April 26.

The sixteenth edition of the Malaga Festival will be the first to be directed by Antonio Vigar, after Carmelo Romero’s sudden departure a few weeks ago for “personal reasons.”
