Eurostat: 10.2 per cent rise in 2001
Eurostat, the EU’s Luxembourg-based statistics office has just published its Cinema Statistics report for 2001 which shows a 10.2 per cent increase in film attendance in the EU. A total of 930m tickets were sold and box office takings also rose by 12.9 per cent, breaking the Euros5b barrier.
Attendance grew in 2001 in all EU member states with the exception of Finland (down 8 per cent) and Belgium (down 2 per cent).
The best performing countries were Germany (+17 per cent), France (+12 per cent) and Denmark (+11 per cent) and on average each citizen of the EU went paid 2.4 visits to the pictures in 2001, compared to 5.4 in the US and 1.3 visits for Japan.
As far as individual EU member states go, Ireland tops the annual attendance league with 4.2 trips to the local cinema, followed by Spain with 3.6, with the Finns and Greeks bringing up the rear with a paltry 1.3 visits each.
