Clooney gets backed twice in Germany

- The Filmboard Berlin-Brandenburg and Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung present their latest project support
George Clooney's action-thriller The Monuments Men, which is shooting in Berlin right now, has received financing support from the Filmboard Berlin-Brandenburg and Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung. Both film funds are fostering the German co-production, which is being produced in partnership with Siebente Babelsberg Film GmbH, a subsidiary of Studio Babelsberg AG, with €400,000 each. The Monuments Men is directed by Clooney, who also stars in it.
The Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg greenlighted 33 film projects that will be supported with €6.15 million. The Berlin-based production outfit zero one film received 100,000 € for Alexander Sokurov‘s new picture Francofonia - der Louvre unter deutscher Besatzung [+see also:
film profile]. The Turkish for Beginners director Bora Dagtekin will shoot the school comedy Fack ju Göthe (€650,000).
Among the international film projects that got backing from Berlin are Winter Sleep by Nuri Bilge Ceylan (€150,000), The Voices by Marjane Satrapi (450,000 €) as well as Rupert Everett's Mr. Oscar Wilde - The Happy Prince (€400,000), which is co-produced by Cine Plus Filmproduktion. Everett has written the story, which tells of the last years in the life of Oscar Wilde, and is set to direct and play the title role. The cast also includes Colin Firth, Emily Watson and Tom Wilkinson.
Austrian director Hans Weingartner is going to direct the road movie 303 (€200,000) about two twenty-somethings heading in an old van from Berlin to Portugal. Wacken 3D-Louder than Hell is the title of a 3D-documentary that will catch the mood of 80.000 heavy metal fans in Northern Germany, with €150,00 received for this ambitious event film.
The Mitteldeutsche Medienförderung is supporting 30 film projects for a total amount of €4.598m. Besides The Monuments Men and The Happy Prince (€250,000), the supported projects include Detlev Buck's new feature Bibi & Tina – Der Film (€450,000), Die Goldene Gans by Leander Haußmann (€300,000), 540 Grad by Lars Büchel (€500,000), Da muss Man(n) durch by Marc Rothemund (€325,000) and Neele Vollmar's children's adventure Rico, Oskar und die Tieferschatten (€300,000).
