Romanian box office: First half of 2013 brings 16% increase on 2012

- Domestic releases are responsible for only 3.5% of total number of admissions

Several new cinemas have a positive effect on Romania's film distribution: both admissions and revenues increased with 16% during the first half of 2013 compared to the same period of 2012. The 90 releases of 2013 sold 4.32 million tickets, with revenues of €17.59m, compared to 3.71 million admissions for the 89 releases of the first half of 2012 (with revenues of €15.17m).

The most successful films of the year so far are Fast and Furious 6, with 261,000 admissions, followed by Iron Man 3 (200,000 admissions), and The Great Gatsby (155,000).

As for domestic releases, the star of the decade is Calin Peter Netzer's Child's Pose [+see also:

(photo), which was welcomed with great enthusiasm by Romanian cinemagoers after winning the Berlinale Golden Bear in February. The Parada Film production had 103,352 admissions in 17 weeks, results that made is the most successful domestic release in more than a decade.

Child's Pose improved numbers for the total admissions for Romanian films: the nine domestic productions released since the biginning of 2013 sold 151,834 tickets, which amounts to 3.5% of the total number of admissions. All the other films have less thant 10,000 admissions, with one exception, the MediaPro Pictures comedy The Granny (10,568 admissions).

Child's Pose also became the most successful European release in Romania, followed by The Impossible [+see also:

(35,000 admissions).

The first half of 2013 brought another record in terms of local distribution: Monsters University become the film with the widest release in history, with 105 screens.
