by Franco-Portuguese director Ruben Alves is more than a “summer film,” it is the film that conquered Portuguese hearts, welcoming more spectators than Fast & Furious 6 by Justin Lin, which headed the box-office until last week.

La Cage Dorée was released on Portuguese screens on August 1, distributed by Zon Lusomundo. On September 4, it had welcomed 467,082 spectators and made a revenue of 2,394,322 euros.

The Portuguese release of La Cage dorée, four months after it was discovered by the French audience, coincided with the moment when many Portuguese emigrants (like those portrayed in the film) come back to the country to spend their holidays with their families.

In the film, scripted by Alves with Jean-André Yerles and Hugo Gélin, a couple of Portuguese immigrants in France (a concierge and a worker respectively played by Rita Blanco and Joaquim de Almeida) learn they have inherited a house in Portugal. What should have been a dream come true will however lead to a series of events which enable the director to play with stereotypes on immigration and the way in which France treats these immigrants and their descendants.

Outside France and Portugal, the success of La Cage dorée was not missed: the film also found a distributor in Germany (which chose the title Portugal, mon amour) and last week, an American production company expressed an interest in making a remake about a Hispanic family in the United States.
