, directed by Philippe Blasband, has been given the honour of opening this year’s La Ciotat Film Festival on 9 April. This title was also selected for competition at the Crime Film Festival in Cognac that opens on 11 April.
Produced by Artemis Productions, Un honnête commerçant marks Blasbend’s directorial feature debut and stars Benoît Verhaert, Philippe Noiret, Yolande Moreau and Serge Larivière. Set almost entirely indoors, the film follows the interrogation of a man called Hubert Verkamen by police inspectors Bex and Denoote who suspect Verkamen, apparently the “honest shopkeeper” of the title, of being a dangerous drug dealer. What they don’t know is that Verkamen has an ally in the form of Maurice Chevalier’s ghost.
Released in Belgium on 11 September 2002, Un Honnête commerçant has done the rounds of some of the world’s most famous festivals including Venice (Critics’ Week), Montreal (Competition), Istanbul, Ottawa, Rouen, Israel, Amiens and St Jean de Luz.
