LEGISLATION Austria

Vienna Catalogue for film regulation

by

Andreas Mailath-Pokorny from the Vienna Culture City Council and Peter Zawrel, the director of the Vienna Film Fund, presented the Austrian Federal Government with a draft set of guidelines for a federal audiovisual regulatory policy. It is based on “Agenda 2006” , that they jointly developed.
The proposals include a reform to film promotion, state broadcaster ORF and private TV acts as well as bringing federal support funds on a par with the rest of Europe, i.e. at least Euros20m. The reform calls for an introduction of tax incentives, based on those in vigour in Luxembourg in order to encourage more private investment in the film production industry.
The recommendations also included closer collaboration between the Federal Government and the Federal States or Laenders, as well as with Central and East European countries in the following sectors: co-production, finance and training, and film conservation. It also called for an annual report on the state of the film industry’s finances.
