CANNES 2002 Directors’ Fortnight

Isabelle x Two

by

- Twin girls separated at birth and played by Isabelle Huppert are the protagonists of Deux by Germany´s Werner Schroeter

French diva Isabelle Huppert is renowned for her excellent portrayals of the complex female psyche. In Werner Schroeter´s new film, Deux, screened at Directors´ Fortnight, she plays twins, Magdalena and Maria, who were separated at birth. The former still lives with her adoptive parents and works in a Paris art gallery while the latter is a nightclub singer in Marseille. Each has just the vaguest of memories of their mother, played by Bulle Ogier, two postcards sent from Portugal.
None of the three women is happy and each uses indiscriminate sex as a sort of placebo. «Their relationships are based on fantasy not reality. They are dreamlike,» said Isabelle Huppert. Schroeter, who came to public attention in the 70s says, «After thirty years in this business, I finally found the actors and actresses I wanted. This screenplay was written with Isabelle and Bulle Ogier in mind. Isabelle is an actress with the ability to negate her personality in favour of expressing her creativity. She is full of energy and has no prejudice.»
