Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Act of Killing, the terrifying depiction of the reconstruction of the mass murders that took place in Indonesia during the anti-communist purge of 1965-66, has been one of this year’s successes. After being premiered at the latest Copenhagen’s CPH:DOX, it went on to win several prizes in festivals all around the world, such as Berlin, Madrid, Mexico City and Istanbul.

Iranian-born and now Switzerland-based Kaveh Bakhtiari’s Stop-Over was presented during the Director’s Fortnight at the last Cannes Film Festival. Bakhtiari’s feature debut is set in Athens and follows a group of clandestine Iranian immigrants for several months.

Lastly, there’s also Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh’s The Missing Picture, which won the Un Certain Regard award at the last Cannes Film Festival. The film follows Panh’s memories of the time when the atrocious Khmer Rouge ruled over his country, between 1975 and 1979, through clay figures, archival footage and personal narration.

The remaining nominees in the other categories of the European Film Awards will be announced on November 9 at the Seville European Film Festival, and the awards ceremony will take place in Berlin on December 7.
