Greek veterans and newbies meet at Thessaloniki’s Crossroads

“The greatest part of the Thessaloniki’s Crossroads section, is to see projects that have been presented here, return to us as completed features: this means that Crossroads and all those involved in it are doing a great job”, said fest director Dimitri Eipides on Wednesday, welcoming the international film professionals attending the Agora, the fest’s market.

This year’s Crossroads handpicked a selection of 16 projects, including 5 local efforts, coming from veteran and newbie producers alike. Critic-turned-producer Phaedra Vokali is the freshest face here, pitching Zacharias Mavroeidis’ sophomore feature The Veteran, a €400.000 project by Marni Films, currently in treatment and in search of financiers and coproducers.

A feature debut by short-film circuit wunderkind Rinio Dragasaki, this dramedy that Kontovrakis dubs “a reverse buddy movie” has already secured funds from AGAT films and is looking for a third co-producer to cover the remaining 15% of the estimated €1 million budget, as well as sales agents keen to push the film abroad.

Toronto Producers Lab alumni Gregory Athanasiou of Minus Pictures, is gauging interest for Frankenstein: A Death Odyssey, a €1.2 million twist on Mary Shelly’s novel, by international festival darling Costas Zapas, now on his fifth film.

Eleni Afentaki, of MITOS Productions is setting up her sixth production credit, pitching the €700.000 budgeted Fair Play, MOMA-featured director Constantina Voulgari’s fourth film.
