Wargnier and the Pygmies

French director Régis Wargnier’s is about to make his return to film directing after a three-year gap, with Man to Man, his sixth feature and the first since the 1999 production of East-West starring Sandrine Bonnaire.
Man to Man will be made in English and star Clive Owen (Gosford Park). Produced by Vertigo Production with a budget of between Euros25m – Euros30m, it is the story of a 19th century Scottish anthropologist’s encounter with a tribe of Pygmies and the difficulties he experiences on returning to Great Britain. The film is based on a screenplay by Frédéric Fougea and Michel Fessler (Ridicule, Quand tu descendras du ciel)that was rewritten by Wargnier and writer William Boyd. The film will be made on location in South Africa and Scotland.
Wargnier’s feature debut, La femme de ma vie, won a César for best first film in 1987, and he came to the forefront of international attention with his 1992 Indochine (which won him the best European director Goya in 1993). Wargnier’s subsequent Une femme française starring Emmanuelle Béart and Daniel Auteuil, and East-West were rather disappointing, with domestic ticket sales at 750,000 and 462,000 respectively.
