Though there weren’t too many European productions nominated for the 71st Golden Globes, the all-pervasiveness of European talent is very much evident in the 2014 nominations, with the UK leading the way. Leading the charge is US/UK co-production 12 Years A Slave [+see also:

with seven nominations including Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director for British filmmaker Steve McQueen, Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama for British actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, Best Supporting Actor for German-Irish actor Michael Fassbender, Best Supporting Actress for Lupita Nyong’o, Best Screenplay for John Ridley and Best Original Score for German-born Hans Zimmer.

is nominated in the Best Motion Picture – Drama category and the film also has a Best Actress - Motion Picture Drama nod for veteran British actress Judi Dench and Screenplay nods for Steve Coogan and Jeff Pope. British actresses Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson scored nominations in the Best Actress – Motion Picture Drama category for Labor Day and Saving Mr. Banks respectively. British actor Christian Bale is nominated for Best Actor – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy for his turn in American Hustle and fellow British thespian Idris Elba in the Best Actor – Motion Picture Drama category for Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom. British filmmaker Paul Greengrass has a Best Director nomination for Captain Phillips.
