by Fabien Lemercier
- The region also selected projects by Mia Hansen-Love, Baya Kasmi, Emmanuelle Bercot, Magaly Richard-Serrano, Naël Marandin and Yves Hirschfeld
With seven features directed between 1966 and 2003 including Cyrano de Bergerac and The Horseman on the Roof, Jean-Paul Rappeneau left his mark on French cinema. After an absence of 10 years, he returns with Belles familles [+see also:
film profile], which stands out from the seven feature film projects selected by the first 2014 session of the Support Fund for the technical cinematographic and audiovisual fund of the Ile-de-France region.
Written by the director, the screenplay begins with the return to Europe for the first time of Jérôme Varenne, after several years spent in Shanghai for business. He introduces his family to his new Chinese partner. But a long forgotten secret resurfaces on this occasion…
Produced by Marc Missonnier and Olivier Delbosc for Fidélité Films, the cast of Belles familles could (subject to all reserves) include Mathieu Amalric, Léa Seydoux, Gilles Lellouche, Karine Viard and André Dussollier. TF1 Films Production committed to the co-production and pre-purchased the film for a total of 1.6 M€. The French distribution could be handled by Mars. 54 of the 60 days of filming will take place in the Ile-de-France region, which will back the film with 532,000 euros.
The Ile-de-France region will also back the new projects by two female directors who are regulars at big festivals: Eden by Mia Hansen-Løve (read the article - production CG Cinéma – 418,000 euros) and La tête haute by Emmanuelle Bercot (news - Les Films du Kiosque – 304,000 euros).
Amongst the other selected projects we also find Je suis à vous tout de suite, the first feature as a director by Baya Kasmi based on a screenplay co-signed with her accomplice Michel Leclerc (the duo won the César 2011 for Best Original Screenplay for The Name of Loves [+see also:
film profile]). Produced by Karé Productions, the project will be backed by the Ile-de-France region with 456,000 euros.
Finally, the Ile-de-France region will fund Stan by Magaly Richard-Serrano (noticed in 2007 with Dans les cordes), managed by Blue Monday Production (304,000 euros), as well as Il nous reste la nuit [+see also:
film profile] by Naël Marandin (Folamour Productions – 380,000 euros) and the animated project Recup-O-Rama by Yves Hirschfeld (Thaleia Productions – 300,000 euros).
