Swiss Film Award unveils its nominees

On January 29 2014, around 600 guests from the Swiss film industry gathered in Solothurn for the Nominations Night gala, one of the key events in the Swiss film industry’s calendar. Isabelle Chassot , the newly appointed director of the Federal Office of Culture, opened the event that aims to announce the nominees for the 2014 Swiss Film Award.

A jury made up of Swiss Film Academy members compiled a shortlist of nominees based on recommendations submitted by the 254 academy members. In February, 340 members of the Academy will vote for the winners of the eleven categories of the awards.

This year, the Academy will present the Special Academy Award for outstanding technical and artistic achievement and the new Award for Best Film Editing. Also, for the first time, the Best Animated Film Award will be attributed annually instead of every two years.

Many films of this years’ competition contributed to a remarkable box office success. 2013 marked a very strong year for Swiss films with a market share that climbed from 4.7 percent in 2012 up to 8.5 percent, and more than one million tickets for Swiss films were bought by Swiss audience.

The 17th Swiss Film Award ceremony will then take place on March 21 2014 at the Schiffbau, in Zurich, and it will host leading figures from the worlds of film, politics, industry and culture. Since 2013, the cities of Geneva and Zurich take turns at hosting the ceremony in order to encourage greater exchanges between German and French speaking Switzerland, and demonstrate that quality films have the power to transcend borders.
